The Wall

The concrete wall glows with words that it is dreaming: dismembered Tweets that come and go.

It half wakes, looks to see if anyone is there.

You see yourself in its sights.  It’s picked you out as someone interesting.

Wide awake now, it wants to play.  It wants to show you things it’s discovered — things that might help make sense of the world.

But eventually it gets bored, distracted, looking for something else.

And if no one is interested — if no one is looking — it falls asleep again and dreams.  Dreams about other famous walls; what it is to be a wall; how it might be to be soft and yielding, rather than concrete.
